Abstract
Background & Purpose: A decline in the happiness level of students as pivotal human resources defining the future of the country can raise serious concerns about the mental health and work performance of personnel. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of behavioral nudges in increasing the happiness level of students at the faculty of management of Tehran University, and to identify the most effective types of these nudges. The study adopts a human resources approach to enhance overall well-being.
Methodology: This qualitative study was conducted in three phases. Initially, two pilot studies were carried out to preliminarily assess the effectiveness of nudges. Subsequently, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 experts in the field of behavioral nudges. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, and the findings were validated through respondent validation.
Findings: Data analysis led to the identification of four main themes and 10 sub-themes. The main themes included a comprehensive framework for the effectiveness of behavioral nudges in the university environment, outcomes and achievements of applying behavioral nudges, typology of behavioral nudges effective in student happiness, and strategies for designing and implementing behavioral nudges in the university environment. The identified nudges were classified into four main categories: environmental and physical, social and communicative, psychological and cognitive, and controlling and empowering.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that behavioral nudges can have a significant impact on increasing student happiness. It is recommended that universities adopt a systematic approach within the identified comprehensive framework, encompassing: redesigning campus spaces with natural elements and uplifting colors, establishing peer support groups and participatory programs, strengthening counseling centers with a positive psychology approach, implementing goal-setting and academic progress monitoring systems, and utilizing digital communication channels for motivational messaging. These findings can contribute to the design and implementation of effective behavioral interventions aimed at enhancing students' mental well-being and happiness.
