Identifying the Pillars and Drivers Influencing the Development of Fourth-Generation Universities; (A Case Study: Shahid Sattari Air University of Science and Technology)

Abstract
Background & Purpose: The fourth-generation university defines a new professional model for higher education institutions which creates opportunities for local and regional development. This research aims to identify the pillars and antecedents influencing the development of fourth-generation universities.
Methodology: This research is applied in terms of purpose, qualitative in terms of data collection method, and thematic analysis in terms of research implementation method. The research field and the study participants are the faculty members of Shahid Sattari Air University of Science and Technology. Among them, 15 individuals were purposefully selected to participate in a semi-structured interview.
Findings: The results of data coding included 12 general categories. The codes and thematic obtained in relation to the components of the 4th generation university with an emphasis on e-learning include the categories of transformation, service orientation, a culture of excellence, creating new educational relationships, development-oriented, and empowerment. In relation to drivers, the factors influencing the establishment of the fourth generation university include the categories of developing an innovative organizational culture, technological synergy, social responsiveness and accountability, university capacity management, higher education system policies, and financial and economic support.
Conclusion: From a theoretical perspective, the results of this research help managers and faculty members to better understand and identify the components and antecedents of a fourth-generation university. From a practical perspective, the obtained results have the potential to be used both at the university level (for managers, faculty members, and students of Shahid Sattari University) and at the national level (for the overall policymaking of the Ministry of Science).
